A most unusual 1920's Whiting & Davis Art Deco purse in black, white and gold geometric mesh with stair-step fringe. The top of the purse is a two-layer compact. The first layer has four compartments including the original, unused rouge and powder puff. The gold flap on the right side with the Whiting & Davis Co. mark opens and closes and would have originally held a small comb. When the compact is closed, the bottom layer serves as the inside top of the purse.
The outside top of the purse has embossed scroll, stripe and fleur de lis design. In the center, is a domed oval with a black silhouette of a gentleman bowing to a lady. The clasp has a tiny domed glass bead. Please note that there are some superficial scratches on the gold top as well as a bit of wear to the finish where it has dulled in spots over the last 100 years. The inside of the purse is in excellent, like new condition with the exception of a small whole shown at the top left front corner of the mesh. The original black cord handle has been replaced with chain over time. Marked Whiting & Davis & Co. Mesh Bass. Reg US.
I have seen this listed on other sites fo $875.
Top is 2" x 3". Purse length is 8". Mesh at its widest is 4".
